For those who want rich digital entertainment capability coupled with desktop-caliber performance in a stunning mobile design, the HP Pavilion dv7-1020us Entertainment Notebook PC delivers! Expanding on the sophisticated elegance of the current line, the new dv7-1020us laptop is defined by fluid, modern lines and metalized finishes with surprising innovations inside and out. A high gloss HP Imprint2 finish in onyx and chrome features a grid like mesh pattern for subtle contrast to the liquid appearance of the metallic finish. The streamlined look is enhanced with a color matched keyboard and touchpad. Touch media controls light up and become visible only when the system is powered on, further enhancing the clean appearance. Providing more choices than ever, QuickPlay enables access to DVDs, videos, photos, music, karaoke, games, Internet TV, and streamed or recorded TV at the touch of a button with the included NTSC/ATSC TV Tuner. Built-in demos show you how to add music to your slide shows or videos with drag and drop functionality and much more. An HDMI port enables you to watch films on an HDTV. Muvee autoProducer makes creating films complete with effects and transitions a snap. Extras include dual headphone jacks, 1 pair of stereo earbud headphones and an HP Mobile Remote Control.

Also, 64-bit Vista occasionally introduces some compatibility issues, mostly (for me) with the BD-ROM/DVD+RW drive; for example, I have been unable to burn dual layer DVD+R discs with any available 64-bit drivers. The display is spectacular in every viewing condition besides lighting environments that exacerbate the glass glare issue, which really isn't as bad as some others make it out to be.
This is truly a full-featured laptop--Blu-ray support, built-in HDTV tuner, decent graphics card, 4GB RAM, etc. I purchased this laptop from Amazon last August when it was a few hundred dollars more, and at the current price it's still an excellent value.
The laptop also includes useful high-speed ports only found on the newest machines, including HDMI and eSATA.The laptop itself is beautiful, although as prone to smudges and fingerprints as other reviewers mention. I've watched many films on Blu-ray and all but one has played without issues using HP's included QuickPlay software.
The HD tuner works very well with Windows Media Center and allows you to use the computer as a free DVR if you live somewhere with good over-the-air broadcasts; even in Montana I can get most of the major networks for free in HD. I have only two complaints: one is a lack of SPDIF audio output--you either need to purchase an expensive HP proprietary dock or use HDMI to get better than 2-channel stereo sound output.
Otherwise, this is really an outstanding computer.
Worked through HP support and apparently, this is a known issue. I purchased this computer for my father as a Christmas gift. The system shuts itself down about every three to five days and will not restart without removing the battery for several hours. Computer now has to be returned to HP for service. Not what I expected and disappointing.
Amazing laptop for the price. After a month, no problems with it.Loves to attract fingerprints.
overall though it is a great laptop. Pretty nice laptop, my other laptop is a dell m1710 2.33ghz duo core, 100gb hard drive, 2gb ram, 17" screen, nvidia 7950gtx and it compares pretty well. I wanted it with bluetooth but the model amazon sells doesn't have it.It's an excellent but for about $1200.00. It's fast but vista probably slows it down a bit because i can start the m1710 after I turn the hp on and the m1710 starts first and is ready to go while the hp has a considerably longer start up time. The screen is great but you have to be directly in front of it or else it appears dark and is difficult to see clearly/there is a glare, it doesn't generate as much heat as the dell and it is much quieter too. It feels better with video games too which surprised me I didn't expect that from a 9600gt mobile graphics card.I wish it had more usb ports though only three on it but I do use the hdmi port to connect it to my tv, however, i have no blu ray movies that i can use in the drive.and boy does it show fingerprints, can't seem to keep it clean. i hope it holds out though, time will tell. ps, i wanted to add another hard drive but you have to buy a caddy for it to hold the drive securely in the laptop, $60 for the caddy which is just a piece of metal seems unreasonable.
I've worked with six different HP laptops and they seem to get better and better. The keypad feels very responsive and pleasantly tactile while the performance is just what you'd expect. My dv7 replaces a quite serviceable HP laptop that I'm giving to my son and is intended to function as a "desktop replacement." While the issue with showing fingerprints is obvious, this is a beautiful machine with fantastic capabilities. The screen is quite customizable and makes the most of anything it displays. There are plenty of ways to take this basic configuration and pump it up at the HP website, but for the money, this is a combination that is simply superb. There have been no negative surprises and plenty of positive ones.
